Lancefield Romsey Community Bus Inc.
Quarter of a Century for Community Bus Service
The Lancefield Romsey Commuter Bus Cooperative recently celebrated 30 years of delivering a cost-effective, comfortable and safe service for local residents commuting to Melbourne. Just like a big car-pool, the incorporated Cooperative is an accredited bus service, fully owned and operated by the people who use it.
In times of increased fuel costs and traffic delays, the Cooperative’s daily city travelers enjoy a relaxed and air-conditioned ride without the hassle of parking, all for $60 per week.
"The bus really has a community feel to it," says the Co-op’s Membership Officer, Muir Calderwood. "We all get to know each other, support each other, help care for and drive the bus."
"We run our own committee. The last meeting was held on the bus on the way home and took about five minutes. Then we ate pizza," he laughs.
The bus leaves Lancefield at 6.35 am each working day and makes a couple of pick-up stops in Romsey and Monegeetta. It drops commuters off at Flemington Road and Swanston Street in the city, before parking for the day in William Street. The bus then makes its return journey at 5.20 pm from William Street, picking up passengers in North Melbourne before returning to Lancefield around 6.30 pm.
If you’re tired of battling traffic, unreliable public transport and increases in travel costs … and enjoy the occasional pizza, why not give the local community transport alternative a go?
