Christmas in July Evening with author John Marsden

The Romsey Region Business and Tourism Association (RRBATA) held a cosy Christmas in July themed evening event at The Grange Lancefield (Melbourne Lancefield Road) on Thursday 16th July 2015.

President of RRBATA Dr Jenny Stillman, Ged McLaughlin (RRBATA), Sharyn Ede (RRBATA), JOHN MARSDEN (guest speaker), Secretary/Treasurer Wendie McLaughlin (RRBATA), Dr Greg Powell (RRBATA and La Trobe University)

Prior to the commencement of the evening guests assembled in front of the roaring fire and selected from a range of wines, soft drinks and beers on offer.

Representatives from local schools (including administrators, teachers and students), MRSC Councillors, Romsey Lancefield Rotary Club, Lancefield Romsey Lions Club,   Romsey Neighbourhood House, Goldfields Library Corporation (Romsey), students from Deakin University, RMIT University, La Trobe University, community representatives and friends gathered at The Grange (Lancefield) to hear international author and local school principal John Marsden talk about childhood.

John provided his thoughts on ‘Childhood’. He stressed the importance of nurturing curiosity and creativity in our children as a way to encourage the development of Rich Language. John believes that children quickly conform to adult language conventions whenever adults find their spontaneous expresssed thoughts humorous.

John challenged the audience’s thinking by arguing most eloquently that as much as language conventions are important, it is also vital that we allow children to freely delve into their fantasy worlds where they can more readily make sense of their surroundings uninhibited by the constraints of language conformities.

It is knowing when, as adults, it is appropriate to intervene without impeding a child’s ability to take risks when speaking and writing.

Definitely food for thought !!!

International best selling author John Marsden talks at length to the audience.

Councillors Ian Ellis, Henry McLaughlan, Graham Hackett and John Connor were in attendance supporting this new initiative of RRBATA.

At the end of the evening John Marsden was presented with gifts of wines (RRBATA and McLaughlin CB Pty Ltd – Air Cargo Services) and two West Bourke Books Inc (When Memory Turns the Key and Romsey: A Veritable Garden of Eden) based on the history of the Romsey Shire for his school’s library.

Special thanks to the Romsey Lancefield Rotary Club for their donation of water bottles for everyone present as well as for students at Candlebark School in Romsey.
